MHBP North South Divider Invitational March 23/24th

Format

A North versus South invitational featuring 6 regular 3 man teams on each side.

North will probably comprise of 3 x Manchester; 1 x Scotland; 1 x Sheffield; 1 x Hebden Bridge or maybe Birmingham.

South will (hopefully) comprise of 4 x London; 2/3 x Cambridge and/or 0/1 x Brighton.

Teams play for points across the weekend to decide whether the North or the South are the champs:

– Individual teams can score 12 points for finishing top of the Swiss round qualification (regular 10 minute polo, first to 5) on Saturday followed by 11 for second etc. down to 1 point for 12th place in the ranking.
– The Bench Minor on Saturday is only for the top 3 Swiss rounds ranked teams from the North , playing as a 9 man squad, versus the top 3 ranked teams from the South – 45 minutes on court, all players must be on court for a minimum of 3 minutes, 10 points to the winning bench and 0 to the losers.
– Sunday is individual teams double elimination (regular 10 minute polo, unlimited goals, with 15 minute final/s) with 24 points the overall winners; 22 second; 20 third etc.
– Sunday the event closes with the final Bench Minor featuring the bottom 3 teams from North and the South (from the Saturday Swiss rounds ranking table) - 10 points to the winning bench and 0 to the losers.
– All points tallied from the two days decide the overall champions – so there is everything to play for from Saturday right down the final Bench on Sunday.

Approximate Timetable
Friday night under the lights – 1800/21.30 throw ins/pick ups then pub/grub.

Saturday
0900-1000 throw ins/pick ups

1000 – 1800 12 teams x 3 or 4 Swiss rounds

1800 – 1845 North vs. South Bench Minor Edition 1

2000 onwards – MHBP social and North vs. South dance off

Sunday
0900-1000 throw ins/pick ups

1000 – 1500 12 team double elimination continues to finals

1500 – 1545 North vs. South Bench Minor Edition 2

1600 - Prizes and farewells…

We would like to draw up an initial shortlist of teams interested in playing in the event – please add your team name and the names of the three probable players before the end of January under the North or South heading.

We will issue invitations from the first week in February to confirm details and sort accommodation for all.

We only have the one court in Manchester currently, however it of decent size, has a great near-all weather surface and lighting if we run late.

If the format is deemed successful we will run a West versus East later in the year to include Bristol, Birmingham et al.

Awesome! Sounds sweet, are we inviting those annoying "winny" London teams, or ones we can beat?

snottyotter
snottyotter's picture

Obviously whoever Woody is playing with should be top of the list.

snottyotter

I quite like the idea of the final result hinging on the lower placed players with the higher placed ones cheering/heckling.

^ Let's hope it doesn't come down to you to win it for the North - what with your Reading connections...

Looks good Neil! If you need any help in the run-up, let me know. Doubt I'll be around the weekend itself sadly.

I'm not sure if I'm about, but it sounds good. I won't commit to anything yet, but as soon as I know if I can, I will! Sorry for the vagueness

Judging by the teams that have signed up the south shall rise again.

Do You have a 3rd Rob/Sal? If not I could join you. Need to see how finances are over the next month or so. And if any of the Cardiff people can make it up.

snottyotter
snottyotter's picture

Not yet, I think we're going to put a team together, so we'll see how that goes 1st, but maybe.

One team between Glasgow/Edinburgh might cause some disturbance. Don't know how active Edinburgh are at the moment. But we will be fighting for the 3 spaces on a team for each city let alone between 2 cities :(

Unless you let us field a Scottish Bench team?

literallyoverthemoon
literallyoverthemoon's picture

Yeah, I'm sure Glasgow and Edinburgh will be able to put forward a team each.

Dtroll

at Sheffield throw in tonight there seamed to be plenty of interest. We're gunna Decide how many teams to put forward over the next few days and let you know.
I've let the Holmfirth guys know, but dont reckon they'll be up for the whole caboodle! Maybe some throwins and heckling. We'll be playing tomorrow night and I'll discuss it with them. Of course you guys are welcome to come over and join in. It'd be good for us to have some seasoned players come over to improve our game.

Like the OP says, we want an 'interested' list of teams so that we can put together a balanced and competitive tournament overall through the 'invitational' process. The more in the 'interested' list the better chance we have of achieving this!

I'm interested - at least in the beers, heckling and pickups!
