Can do any of the qualifiers with people who are about earlier, I'm going to randomise the teams, any games that can be played early will be but the bulk of the tournament is the elim anyway.
What would you think to missing the 5 minute games and going straight into the triple elim with randomised team numbers?
I found the 5 minute games unsatisfyingly short in Newcastle, and triple elim will, in effect, seed itself as losers play losers, winning play winners.
Then we could split into two leagues (seeded by elim result) for round robin matches at the end. This means everyone will get more matches against teams of similar ability and "up and coming" teams will have the chance at glory by winning "league two".
10 team triple elim = 22 games
2 x 5 team round robins = 20 games
Total = 42 games
Time = 7.5 hours estimate.
Ten minute games pretty much always take 15 mins with stoppages for goals and getting people on and off the court, probably more. 42 games will be 10.5 hours.
Rob - That's a shame. It didn't seem like that in Newcastle. About five seconds per goal then team changeover should be less than 1 minute, although i see how it could be a lot longer if people weren't organised.
Chan - We played 15 minutes for the final but 10 would have been better as it ended up being 30 minutes with the double elim rules meaning there is another final if the unbeaten team loses the first.
Rob - It was ok for the best teams, but imagine you are the worst team participating, 10th seed. In your system you will only get 40 mins on court all day, and most of your games will be against much stronger opposition. In my idea, which could be tweaked if time is an issue, you will get a guarantee of 70 mins on court and matches against the 9, 8, 7, 6 seeds, as well as the stronger teams.
Sorry if anyone finds all this really boring! I'm just very interested in tournament formats and that sort of thing generally.
Going on other tournaments 15min is generous, even well organised ones, if we stop the timer for goals then it's defo more than 5 seconds, I'm going to make sure teams are ready to get on quickly but there is the inevitable "I just won/lost" hanging around, getting people off and on and in position, checking refs and teams are ready. Then you have time outs for mechanicals/injuries and turning over the ball for resets if there are fouls (no double tap outs).
It'll be the same amount of court time as in Newcastle, I don't think there is enough time in the day to get more, the other way would make more sense if it was 2 round robin groups followed by a single elim, that'll take 5 hours for round robin and then another 2 or so for the elim, not a bad way of doing it, will give everyone 50mins min on court, maximum will be 70mins, but only if you do bad in the round robin then win, so slightly fairer gametime but with harder end games for the worse teams. With the 3 game guarantee the worse teams will be playing the worse teams, so their games won't be harder after the 1st one in the knockout.
No worries Rob, I find this all very interesting, although it doesn't matter as it will be a great day whatever.
I like your idea of 4 x 10 minute round robin seeding games then single elim, although I'm still into having the two leagues where teams play similar level teams and there are "League 1" and "League 2" champions. Perhaps it could be modified to:
Standard Double Elimination (not 3 game guarantee)
Then 2 x 5 team Round Robin leagues
All games are 8 minutes long
If we say each 8 minute game will take 10 minutes (whipping granted)...
Total Games = 39
Total Time = 6.5 hours (or 7.5 hours if you think 8 min games take 12 mins)
Court Time Guaranteed = 1 Hour
Never get an 8min game turned around in 10mins, 12 minimum.
It sounds alright, but I'd have to make 2 trophies, still got to do the 1st one. Generally I think it's better to stick to previous form and remove the randomness to seed an elim, not use an elim to seed a separate round robin. You'd lose a lot of the suspense that goes along with a knock out competition, there's little use in winning the elim, as long as you come top 5 you'll have a chance of winning league 1 and can save a bit of energy by not playing the last few games, it'll also be awkward to figure out who finished in what posistion as there are a lot of drawn position further down the standing.
The other good thing about your suggestion of 4 x 10 minute round robin seeding games then single elim is that if anyone is travelling back on the day we should be done for them to leave by at least 6pm, then we could play throw-ins after if there is the appetite. It would be nice to play on a team with Non-Geordies for a couple of games.
How about 4 rounds of Swiss system. 10 minute games. Then the single elim.
This would mean more closely-matched teams play each other plus there would be an overall winner of the Swiss section as, with 10 or 11 teams, after 4 games only one team will remain unbeaten.
Anyway, it's 5:00am, I'd better go play some bike polo.
I'm not fucking about with swiss, I don't know it well enough and would need to take a laptop with me and get internetz. I'm gonna stick to my guns, warm up/mini seeding rounds then double elim.
There we go.
The need-a-teams can also make a team. I think MCR can also squeeze another team or two out.
Yeah, maybe one more if we get hold of some people, will be 10 or 11 teams then.
10 teams looks like taking about 7 hours total.
5 min qualifiers (allow 8mins per gameish = 1 hour 20)
1vs2 2vs3
3vs4 4vs5
5vs6 6vs7
7vs8 8vs9
9vs10 10vs1
3 game guarentee double elim http://www.printyourbrackets.com/3-game-guarantee/3gg-10-teams-seeded.pdf
Max 22 games, allow 15mins each = 5 and a half hours.
11 teams looks like taking about 8 hours.
5 min qualifiers (8mins per gameish = 1 and a half hours.)
1vs2 2vs3
3vs4 4vs5
5vs6 6vs7
7vs8 8vs9
9vs10 10vs11
11vs1
3 game guarantee double elim
http://www.printyourbrackets.com/3-game-guarantee/3gg-11-teams-seeded.pdf
Max 25 games, allow 15mins each = 6 and a quarter hours.
Whipping ftw...
Yeah, we'll try and get the next 2 teams ready to go straight on.
Srsly? The Panzer VIII was a fat bastard designed for 12mph, but so heavy they couldn't find an engine big enough to drag the prototypes above 8mph!
Should have gone for Jagdpanzer, a low-profile big-gun giantkiller...
Sorry, I don't understand why 10 minute games will take 15 minutes? Also, you've missed 7 vs 8 from the qualifying round.
we can start some games earlier, no?

5 min games will be SHITE
I quite liked the little 5 minute games in Newcastle.
see what I did there? :)
was the final 10 mins?
All the elim games are 10 mins, just the mini qualifier games are 5.

I will try to find team mate asap
Tum, no worries if you cant find anyone ... Lizzy from Glasgow & Steve from Newcastle I think will need a team.
I can probably put a couple of Squid up if required...

Sorry, that was a big blurb of conciousness. I think the double elim will have a bit more suspense but am open to the other way.
5 team round robin x2 http://www.printyourbrackets.com/5teamroundrobinprint.html
10 team single elim http://www.printyourbrackets.com/pdfbrackets/10teamsingleSeeded.pdf

That's a good point about suspense and trophies.
