13/14 Winter League - Voting and intent to play

Better late (stupid cold, stupid broken spacebar) than never... There was a small amount of interest in the other thread and we had one proposal from Rob and the default format. Indicate if you intend to play, pick which format you'd prefer, I'll count them up at the end of the week and we'll have a winner...

Rob's Proposal:

Quote:

We could do something similar to Hull but made to incorporate every combination of teams. Everyone who's interested goes onto a list ad then every 3 person team has to play every other 3 person team. Points go to the player, with the usual 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss and goals can be either individually counted or per team depending on how we want to encourage play or be arsed counting. Games should be best of 3 I reckon, pre arranged and either at regular sessions if others are cool with it or other days if they can sort a ref/score keeper out. If they are on regular days then maybe a max of 1 set of 3 team games per session with throw ins in between, or if everyone there is on a team and wants to do a triple header that's cool as long as no one is left out. There should be a nice league table at the end of best players and best teams and a load of stats for Emyr to look over.

Quote:

once we get through the first lot of games with the teammates you're used to playing with it'll be fine to tidy up the leftover combinations and there should be enough games to encourage everyone to play throughout the bleak midwinter with a relatively small number of players.

Quote:

Maybe even some kind of play off final with the players in 1st/3rd/5th against 2nd/4th/6th and a (slightly more organised than usual)piss up afterwards.

Default proposal:

Quote:

3x3 - each team plays every other team twice (think home/away games). 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Slightly longer games than normal.

Playing:
1.

Rob's format:
1.

Default format:
1.

Be great to see this happen but we struggle to get 6 each week and when we do I'd say 60% of the players for what ever reason don't like to play at a competitive tourney level. If this is what this process is encouraging then I'm all up for it. If there's no change of attitude towards the game then I'd suggest just keep it as it is. Normal social throw ins.

Yeah, thought it would be good to bring in some distinction between fun/warm-up games and fast/competitive games. I know some people want to play 100% all the time and sometimes people just want to take it easy and have a bit of fun. Was hoping for this to be inclusive of people at both ends of the spectrum.

If there isn't enough interest to get a handful of teams together then we'll just stick to regular throwins unless someone comes up with something better!

Keen to play - if tourney level would help me improve a bit(I think) but still keen to play if social

I think ^^that is the point, it gives a bit of a distinction between two of the reasons people play.

Keen to play. Dont mind format. How will teams be formed? Surely we want to ensure competitive, evenly matched games

Nah, we want to win.

Part of the reason I like the idea of playing all the combinations of players is because it'll give everyone the chance to play with and against teams of differing abilities, so will be good tournament training, it'll also turn a small group of players into a large group of teams, so mean moar games.

I don't understand it or how it will work in MCR - but am always up for more competitive polo. Put me down for that bit...

I think the idea is that instead of trying to cram in an individual-all-combinations round robin format into a single day (although our previous 5-man 2v2 RR was awesome), we try to achieve an individual-all-combinations RR over the next 4 or 5 months between now and March when I expect UK Polo 2014 to unhibernate.

I suspect we'll need an app for this. I'm off work this week but will be busy digging, sawing and building, so I'll see what I can knock up next week.

This is how Hull do it, could we pinch they're idea?

Well, looks like Rob won. Well done Rob. Now to figure out the best way to run a Hull-style system...

If you can meet me in town Wednesday night we can work through a solution before my quiz appointment (now 9pm at Fab Cafe rather than 8pm at Oddest).

We'll make an app for that.

Will check but should be around, might need reminding on the day though.
